What we do?
We study how bacteria interact with the body, cause damage to our brain and how our immune system interacts with them. We focus on various pathogenic factors such as pore-forming toxins from the cholesterol-dependent cytolysin group (pneumolysin, perfringolysin), but in the last years our interest extended to factors, promoting bacterial (Streptococcus pneumonae) and viral (Covid-19, Vaccina viruses) growth and damage in the brain as well. We also study various novel therapeutic approaches, allowing for better treatment of brain infections.

Who We Are
We combine the expertise of medical and non-medical researchers to clarify the pathogenic mechanism of Streptoccus pneumoniae meningitis. We collaborate with several research groups in Switzerland and abroad - Prof. Ronald Nau at the University of Göttingen, Prof. Tim Mitchell (University of Birmingham), PD Dr. Lucy Hathaway (IFIK, Bern), Dr. Denis Grandgirard (IFIK, Bern), Prof. Stephen Leib (IFIK, Bern), Prof. Anne von Gottberg (National Institute for Communicable Diseases, South Africa), PD Dr. Eduard Babiychuk (Anatomy, Bern).

Where We Are
Our laboratory is positioned at the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Bern, Switzerland. As part of the Medical Faculty, we represent a bridging point between basic research and clinically-oriented research.
